Before 1888, Virginia’s colors were actually grey and cardinal red. A meeting was called to address the fact that those colors did not show up well on the football fields at the time. The story goes that a student athlete who had returned from a summer trip from the University of Oxford was wearing a navy and orange scarf from his travels. A fellow student pointed out the color combo, and the colors were adopted then and there.
